Trini Paul Pryce Shares ‘Hamlet’ stage with actor paul giamatti

Local actor Paul Pryce is in a production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet being presented at the Yale Repertory Theatre, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Pryce has been based in the US for the past several years, pursuing an acting career, as well as working as a model from time to time. A highly motivated and hard-working young man, Pryce, in the early days of his time in New York, waited tables and did other part-time jobs to support himself as he studied his craft.

Hamlet The Prince of Denmark is “Shakespeare’s harrowing tragedy of corruption, betrayal and madness”, according to the Yale Repertory Theatre. “Haunted by a ghostly revelation that his father, the king, was murdered, Hamlet puts into motion a vengeful plan that will have devastating consequences for his family and the kingdom.”

This production of Hamlet, directed by James Bundy and starring Golden Globe Award winner and Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti as the Prince of Denmark, plays at the University Theatre in New Haven from March 21 to April 13.

Paul Pryce stars alongside fellow Yale School of Drama alumnus Paul Giamatti in the roles of Fortinbras and Player King. Fortinbras is a resolute Norwegian prince who seeks the rightful retrieval of his father’s lands, lost to Hamlet’s father in a duel. The Player King is one of the principle actors in Hamlet’s “play within a play”.

Giamatti was nominated for the Academy Award for his work in Cinderella Man and won the Golden Globe for playing the title character in the HBO miniseries John Adams and for Barney’s Version. The award-winning cast boasts such names as Tony-nominated Marc Kudisch (Claudius), Drama Desk Award nominee Lisa Emery (Gertrude), Gerry Bamman (Polonius) and Tommy Schrider (Laertes).

Pryce has also toured the US doing Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Other notable theatre credits in New York include the world premiere of the play Pre-Disposal by John Prescod; Pecong, featuring Tony Award winner Lillias White at the National Black Theatre of Harlem; Lamp and Moth; and Harry The Hunk On His Way Out.

Roles at the Yale School of Drama include Othello, Julius Ceasar, Twelfth Night, Cymbeline and Iphigenia Among The Stars. Some of his theatre credits in Trinidad and Tobago include Carnival Messiah, Jesus Christ Superstar, MANtalk and the Caribbean classic Smile Orange. In August 2012, Pryce produced and co-directed Rum and Coca-Cola by Mustapha Matura, with his company Scarlett Project.
